Rentals
Our rental program is designed for the prospective musician, child or adult, whose interest in playing a stringed instrument may become a long-term love. Each contract is insured and includes an earned discount towards instrument purchase.
Growing children need instruments that grow with them, and purchasing a new violin after every growth spurt can get expensive – not to mention the hassle of reselling smaller instruments that you no longer need.
Our rental program allows you to exchange your instrument at any time – no change in contract and no additional charge.
Rental rates do not vary with size – so no matter how tall your child grows, your rental rate will stay the same. And for the life of your rental, your contract will earn discount that you can use towards a full-size instrument when the time is right.
Why should I rent when I can buy an inexpensive instrument online?
Low-priced instruments sold online often come with poor quality materials and workmanship, and frequently cannot be used in the condition in which they arrive. You may need to spend two or three times the original price to make an online purchase playable, only to end up with an instrument that is prone to maintenance issues and difficult to play.
To give yourself or your child the best chance at a rewarding musical experience, please consider a good-quality rental before resorting to online “deals”. Renting from a reliable strings business like ours is an affordable way to access well-made, regularly maintained instruments with the additional benefits of maintenance coverage and the earned purchase discount.
Is my rental insured? What is covered?
Rental insurance is included with every rental contract and covers all maintenance and repairs that result from an instrument’s normal and appropriate use – including the replacement of worn-out strings and bowhair.
In the case of accidental damage, a deductible will apply to repair or replacement fees.
Certain kinds of damage are not covered by our insurance. These include deliberate breakage, etching or scratching; damage due to exposure to extreme environments (e.g. very hot, cold, wet, or dry), damage due to transport as checked baggage, and lost instruments. Additionally, cellos and basses that are transported on school buses are not covered by our insurance.
For full details on our insurance policies, please see the Rental Agreement Terms on our Rental Registration form.
What is the purchase discount? How does it work?
Your rental contract will earn a discount that you can use towards an instrument purchase when the time is right for you. The discount will build with every quarterly payment you make, starting with your first payment.
The purchase discount is based on the rental portion (total payment less tax and insurance) of your quarterly payment, and is equal to 100% of the rental fees paid in the first year plus 50% of the rental fees paid after the first year.
The discount may be used towards a student outfit (instrument, bow and case) or upgrade instrument of the same type as the instrument you rented – in other words, if you rented a violin, you may use your discount towards the purchase of a violin or violin outfit, but not towards a viola, cello, bass, or any other item. Each discount can be used towards only one purchase and cannot be combined with any other discounts.
What if I do not want to make a purchase when I stop renting? Can I use my discount towards something else?
The purchase discount can be used for up to a year after you return your instrument and close your rental account. However, it is only valid towards a student outfit or upgrade instrument of the same type as your rental and is not valid towards any other purchase.
Is there an instrument small enough for my 3, 4 or 5 year old?
Yes! Sizes run as small as 1/32, which will fit a three year old.
How do I know when my rental payment will be processed?
Rental payments are processed at regularly scheduled 3-month intervals, and we will send you an email reminder of each upcoming payment 1-2 weeks before it is processed. You are also welcome to inquire with us directly by email or at 401-284-0265.
How are rental payments processed? Can I pay by check?
Rental payments are processed automatically on a credit or debit card. Check or cash payments are accepted in lieu of the automatic payment– however, a valid credit or debit card on file is required, even if you opt to pay by another method.
What if I need to stop my rental? Can I get a refund?
You can close your rental account at any time by returning your instrument to our shop. The first 3-month payment is non-refundable. After that, we do process rental payment refunds for unused monthly periods. (Once a monthly period has commenced, it is considered used.)
I will only be in town a couple weeks – do you offer any short-term rates?
Yes! We do offer short-term rentals – please contact us for details.
